Christina Aguilera

Almost forgot about this one. Probably because I didn't recognize her. Miles and I were shopping in Chicago's FAO Schwartz on Michigan, when it was still there. Here comes Aguilera and a friend, both dressed like sluts, accompanied by a big black bodyguard. Miles stopped dead in his tracks, staring. "What?" I asked. He pointed and could barely stutter her name. I was dubious, but others around us were having a similar reaction.

OK, undaunted by her celebrity, I told Miles I'd get him an autograph. Christina was looking over the My Little Kitty goods. I approached, pen and paper in hand.

The bodyguard stopped me. "She just wants to do some shopping," he growled at me, stepping between us.

I stuttered something.

Christina wheeled around suddenly, grabbed my pad and pen, scrawled something illegible, and flipped back to the toys.

What is wrong with politics these last 20 years...

The Republican far right has fallen into a remarkable snit over John McCain's march to the nomination. Rush Limbaugh is virtually gnawing his own ankle in rage. By co-authoring legislation with Democrats, Limbaugh ranted, McCain was working with "threats to the American way of life as we've always known it." James Dobson says he won't vote if McCain is the nominee because of infractions ranging from failure to back a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage to "foul and obscene language." Ann Coulter claims she'd support Clinton "because she's more conservative than he is."

Once again, the reason for everything terrible about American politics for the last 20 years becomes clear. These people are nuts.

Writing

Dawn and dreams stir
Paper, coffee

He delivers it slow
Slowly these days

When it comes
Over a period of days

The heart beats hard
Words bloom

Wanting credit
More coffee

Patience returns
Waiting, grateful

More days
More days go

Mettle

this is your year
the test year
the proving ground

there they stand
warriors bearing swords
no two ways about it

they will kill
they choose that path
loudly without regret

on the other road
people plan to turn
to leave behind the lie

in the dark
you will give support
one way or another

what you do
will color who you are
finally and forever

and everyone will know
despite your mute position
we will know

the cock crows
your denial collapses
with dust and woe
